Flea species in Birmingham properties
Identifying the flea species present changes how we approach the source and any wildlife or property factors involved.
We have found that three species turn up in Birmingham properties, although one accounts for the vast majority of call-outs.
Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis)
Ctenocephalides felis is responsible for most flea infestations across Birmingham, including properties with dogs and properties where no pet currently lives.
Adult cat fleas are 1 to 2mm long, dark amber-brown, and laterally compressed so they move fast through fur and carpet pile.
A female cat flea begins to lay their eggs within 36 to 48 hours of feeding, producing up to 50 eggs per day.
Because the eggs are smooth and loose, they fall from the animal immediately and distribute across carpets, rugs, and bedding in every room the cat visits.
Dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis)
Dog fleas are structurally similar to cat fleas and require microscope identification to tell apart.
They are more common in dog-owning households but, because Ctenocephalides felis is so widespread, even properties with dogs are more often infested with cat fleas than dog fleas.
Treatment approaches are the same for both species.
Human flea (Pulex irritans)
The human flea typically shows up in properties with high occupancy or with wildlife access from foxes and hedgehogs in the garden.
Human flea bites tend to cluster around the waist and torso rather than the ankles, which helps identify the type of pest correctly before treatment.
The source is wildlife rather than a domestic animal, so proofing entry points into the property needs to be part of the flea eradication plan alongside the environmental treatment.
The flea lifecycle and why infestations persist
The flea lifecycle is the reason over-the-counter flea control products fail to clear an established infestation.
Products available in supermarkets and pet shops target adult fleas on the surface, but the adult stage accounts for only around 5% of the total flea population in an infested home.
The other 95% live in the carpet, floor gaps, and soft furnishings as eggs, larvae, and dormant pupae.

The most obvious sign of a flea infestation is seeing them move through your pet’s fur.
Small but remarkably agile, fleas are among the most capable jumpers in the animal kingdom, they can leap many times their own body length in a single bound.
Itchy bites
Flea bites present as small red puncture marks, usually around the ankles and lower legs, often in clusters or a short line.
The itch is intense and prolonged, and scratching causes secondary inflammation that can persist for days.
Children and people with sensitive skin sometimes develop a more pronounced reaction around the flea bites.
Flea dirt
Dark specks of flea dirt on pet bedding that smear red-brown on damp white tissue is a sign of fleas.
This is created by dried blood from digested host feeds.
Changes in your pet’s behaviour
Pets scratching or licking obsessively at the base of the tail (the primary feeding site for cat fleas) could be a sign they may be struggling with flea bites.

Vacuum all carpeted rooms, rugs, soft furnishings, and the base of stairs thoroughly immediately before we arrive.
Vacuuming stimulates dormant pupae to hatch, exposing them just before the insecticide is applied. Empty the vacuum bag into an outside bin straight after. Any fleas hatching inside the vacuum will re-infest the property if the bag stays indoors.
After treatment, do not vacuum or mop treated hard floors for at least two weeks.
The residual insecticide on surfaces is what kills fleas as they emerge from the final dormant pupae.
Some visible flea activity for seven to ten days after treatment is expected and is part of how the treatment works: hatching adults contact the treated surface and die before they can breed.
Removing the insecticide by cleaning early is the most common reason a professional treatment appears not to have worked.

- Vacuum carpets and rugs weekly, including along skirting boards and under furniture
- Dispose of the vacuum bag in an outside bin immediately after each vacuum
- Wash pet bedding weekly at 60°C
- Check second-hand upholstered furniture and rugs for flea dirt before bringing them into the property
- Seal gaps where wildlife can enter to proof the property against foxes and hedgehogs that can carry human fleas
- Vacuum the carpets on arriving home after a holiday, as vibration encourages dormant pupae to hatch before you sleep there
Fleas and related pests
You don’t need a pet to develop a flea problem.
